Creative Writing

A course that covers the main techniques of writing utilising a blend of workshops, class discussion and teaching. Designed for both novice and intermediate writers of fiction, the techniques and practices discussed will be common to both short story and novel writing.

Tutor:  Andrew Taylor - author and playwright

Day 1: Why write? / Finding your voice Why do we write? How do we write? Who do we write for? Thinking about why we tell stories, why society needs storytellers. Where inspiration comes from, and how to get started, with tips and tricks for facing a blank page (or screen). Writing the story that only you can. Using your own experience, and points of view – and we’ll look at other forms of narration, such as letters, diaries and email. Structure and pacing and plot, and matching – and mismatching – form and content.
Day 2: Character and Dialogue / Seeing What is character? What makes a memorable character? How do you make your characters live? The secret to writing convincing dialogue. How to describe and make tangible the landscape of your imagination. How to write description so that the reader’s eye doesn’t skim that solid paragraph and go straight to more exciting parts of the story.
Day 3: Internet, Blogs and Genres / Where next? New mediums – such as the Japanese craze for ‘text’ novellas. Using the internet and blogs. Genre fiction. How to get published – and how not to. How to deal with agents, editors, publishers.

The course will run again in October 2010.
